Description

The first wind farm in Britain was built at Delabole in north Cornwall in 1991. Since then, the number of wind farms has increased, but by 2002, wind still accounted for only 0.4 % of the electricity generated in Britain. The Government has set targets of 10 % of electricity to be produced from renewable sources of energy by 2010, and 20 % by 2020, with half in each case expected to come from wind. In Denmark, 18 % of electricity is produced using the wind. Although wind is a clean renewable form of energy, opposition exists to the construction of more wind farms due to the obtrusive impact of the giant turbines on the landscape.
