Description

First giant air freighter of the RAF during the Berlin airlift, 3 November 1948. 'Handley Page Hastings aircraft are now being used on the airlift to Berlin. They are operating from the ex-luftwaffe night-fighter station at Schleswigland, where 19000 tons of soil has been removed and 7000 tons of concrete laid in the last 15 days to get the aerodrome ready. The Hastings will be mainly used for carrying coal into Berlin, and will carry nearly 7.5 tons on each trip. Lorry loaded with sacks of coal pases under the nose of a giant Hastings aircraft at Schleswigland'. (Copyright must be cleared with Barratts.)
