English instrument maker Edmund Culpeper (c 1670-1738). invented this type of stand for microscopes, consisting of a tripod carrying the main body, and the design was adopted by many 18th century makers. This instrument is a scroll type microscope made by George Adams of Fleet Street, London. Adams and his son, George Adams (junior), were leading microscope and instrument makers in the UK from 1735 to 1795. Adams senior held the title 'Mathematical Instrument-Maker to the King', as he made numerous scientific instruments for George III.
