Salted fish being sealed into barrels on the quayside, watched by female fish-gutters. Photographer Frank Meadow Sutcliffe (1853-1941) is best known for his turn- of-the-century portrayals of small sea-town fisherfolk and farmers. Although the photographic technology of the time dictated that his portraits had to be staged, he still managed to breathe an air of spontaneity into his work.
