Detail. This hand-carved wooden automaton was commisioned for the Health Matters Gallery in the Science Museum, London. It was designed by Paul Spooner to summarise visually the health screening and surveillance programmes that characterise late 20th century medicine in Britain and other industrialised nations. Doctors and nurses are shown carrying out health checks on infants, children and pregnant women.
