Wet collodion negative plate numbered 2542. Xie was the daughter of the Reverend George William Kitchin, Dean of Winchester and later of Durham. She was also Queen Alexandra's god-daughter and the wife of Arthur Cardrew. Charles Lutwidge Dodgson (Lewis Carroll) was the author of the clasic childrens book 'Alice's Adventures in Wonderland' (1865). He began taking photographs in 1856 and was notable for his ability to p[roduce far les stilted and artificial portraits, especially of children, than those taken by the vast numbers of profesional portraitists of the time.
