Engraving showing hot baths (fig 1), a plan of Kokura (fig 2), pikes and a placard that accompany convicted criminals (figs 3,4,5), a temple bell (fig 6), a silver unit of currency (fig 7), decorative pillars (figs 8,9), and a Shinto shrine (fig 10). From 'The History of Japan', by Engelbert Kaempfer (1651-1716), published in London in 1727. Kaempfer was a German physician working at the Dutch trading post in Japan from 1690-1692. On his return to Europe he wrote 'The History of Japan', which records many aspects of Japan in the Genroku period (1688-1704).
