Engraving of a hall in the Shogun's palace at Edo (now known as Tokyo), Japan. The court is observing the Dutch tributary mision, with the ladies of the court behind the screen on the right watching Engelbert Kaempfer (1651-1716) dancing in the centre. The margins contain representations of Japanese weapons. From Kaempfer's 'The History of Japan' (1727). Kaempfer was a German physician who worked at the Dutch trading post in Japan between 1690 and 1692. His book records many aspects of Japan during its Genroku period (1688-1704).
