Engraving of the Dutch and their Japanese bearers and escort on their way to Edo (now known as Tokyo) to pay tribute to the Japanese head of state. From 'The History of Japan' (1727) by Engelbert Kaempfer (1651-1716). Kaempfer was a German physician who worked at the Dutch trading post in Japan between 1690 and 1692. His book records many aspects of that country during its Genroku period (1688-1704), and he is represented here as number 15 in the procesion.
