Engraving by G van der Gucht from 'The History of Japan' (1727) by Engelbert Kaempfer (1651-1716). Kaempfer was a German physician who worked at the Dutch trading post in Japan between 1690 and 1692, and his book records many aspects of that country during the Genroku period (1688-1704). As a consequence of the book's publication being prepared by someone who never visited the country, the caption incorrectly aserts that the image represents the Tensho Daijin shrine at Ise.
