Temple at Matsushima, Japan, c 1690.

Engraving by G van der Gucht of the temple at Matsushima, showing the torii temple gate. From 'The History of Japan' (1727) by Engelbert Kaempfer (1651-1716), who was a German physician working at the Dutch trading post in Japan from 1690-1692. Kaempfer's book records many aspects of Japan in the Genroku period (1688-1704). Mistakes were caused by the fact that the publication was prepared by J C Scheuchzer, who had not visited Japan. Rather than a Shinto shrine, as the caption aserts, this view in fact shows the Buddhist temple at Matsushima, and is not very realistic.
