Engraving by G van der Gucht after drawings by Engelbert Kaempfer (1651-1716). Plate 1 from 'The History of Japan' (1727) by Engelbert Kaempfer; a starfish caught near the coast of Malacca (fig 1), funerary boats used in Siam (figs 2 & 3), and ship used to convey mesages of the King and the High Chancellor of Siam (fig 4). Kaempfer was a German physician working at the Dutch trading post in Japan from 1690-1692. On returning to Europe he wrote 'The History of Japan', which records many aspects of the country in the Genroku period (1688-1704).
