Description

Engraving of steel manufacturing from the Illustrated London News (Vol 61/2 p 274). The engraving is by M Jackson. Altas Works, the rolling mill was established in 1860 by Sir John Brown (1816-96) to produce amour plating after observing the technique employed in the construction of the French battleship 'La Gloire'. Here, the pile is being dragged from the furnace to be forced into the roles before it loses its heat.
