The equipment contained in this portable set allows students to investigate the methods underlying techniques such as DNA fingerprinting. Restriction enzymes cut the DNA into fragments which are then separated and identified by electrophoresis. The kit uses disposable carbon-fibre tisue electrodes, an agraose gel and a nine-volt battery. The key feature which makes this kit viable for school use is that the DNA and enzymes are preserved without refrigeration, using a sugar called trehalose.
