Steel wagon, c 1902. Model (scale 1:8). This shows a 10 ton steel wagon of the type used on the Great Western Railway (GWR). It is built entirely of steel and is fitted with the form of 'eitherside' brake patented by W Dean and G J Churchyard in 1902, which allowed the driver to operate the brakes literally from either side of the wagon. The gear for working the brakes consisted of a transverse shaft, carried in bearings below the frame, and having a hand lever fixed to each end of it.
