Description

Engraving by B Cole for the New Universal Magazine in 1754, after an earlier portrait, c 1700. A succesful physician practising in Oxford and London, Radcliffe (1650-1714) became royal physician to Princes Anne (1665-1714) in 1686. He offended her by styling her distemper 'nothing but the vapours'. In spite of annoying many important people by his extraordinary candour, he made a number of remarkable cures. The Radcliffe Infirmary and Observatory in Oxford and Bartholomew's Hospital in London were built and enlarged through funds bequeathed by him.
