Locomotive steam crane, 1939. Model (scale 1:12). This represents a Scott and Pitt travelling steam crane. The arrangement of the machinery, with vertical cylinders and a vertical boiler balancing the jib and load, was evolved about the middle of the 19th century, and remained standard until steam cranes ceased to be built. The lattice jib is curved at its upper end to give clearance for the load and so enable it to be raised to a greater height. Right hand side view.
