Photograph. The 'Herald', a barge equipped with a mechanical elevator, loads coal onto the Dearne at the London & North Western Railway's (LNWR) Holyhead docks, Anglesey, Wales. The elevator was manufactured by Spencers Ltd of Melksham. Holyhead became one of the main railway terminii for travellers to Ireland. The LNWR, like many of Britain's railway companies, also provided ferry services connected to its lines.
