Locomotive by Robert Stephenson and Co, c 1828. Model (scale 1:12). This may have been the model sent by Stephenson to Edinburgh in 1828, representing his first steps towards simplifying the design of the locomotive - by placing the engine on the side of the boiler or beneath it, a desire he expresed in January, 1828. This model would represent an engine with cylinders nine inches in diameter by 21 inches in stroke. The boiler would be four feet in diameter and 7.75 feet long, and the locomotive would have a wheelbase of five feet. Left side view.
