This is a model of the 'James Braidwood' which was in the service of the London Fire Brigade from 1939 to 1961. The boat, built by J Samuel White and Co, is 45ft long and has a draught of three feet six inches. It has three internal combustion engines, each driving a propellor, and is capable of a speed of 20 knots. The two outside engines are also used to drive the turbine fire pumps, each of which has a capacity of 750 gallons per minute. The old term fire float has generally been replaced by the term fire boat. Side view on plinth.
