Hand-coloured etching by Peter Fabris (active 1768-1779), after his own drawing. Illustrated plate from William Hamilton's study of Italian volcanoes, 'Campi Phlegraei' (published in Naples, 1776). The island of Stromboli, one of the 11 Lipari Islands, all of which are volcanic in origin, off the coast of southern Italy. Shows an eruption of lava from (1) the crater and (2) the spots. Hamilton's book is a seminal work on the nature and effects of volcanic explosions.
