Description

Hand-coloured etching by Peter Fabris (active 1768-1779), after his own drawing. Illustrated plate from William Hamilton's study of Italian volcanoes, 'Campi Phlegraei' (published in Naples, 1776). A view into the Atrio di Cavallo valley situated between Somma and Vesuvius, southern Italy. (1) Vesuvius is emitting smoke preparing to erupt, whereas (2) the inside of the cone of Somma shows various strata of ancient lava. Lava shown in the foreground is the produce of the most recent eruptions.
