Hand-coloured etching by Peter Fabris (active 1768-1779). Illustrated plate from William Hamilton's 'Campi Phlegraei' (published in Naples, 1776). View from the top of the mountain of St Nicola of the volcanic region of Campi Phlegraei, now known as Campi Flegraei, showing (1) Mount Somma and Mount Vesuvius, (8) Puzzoli, (now known as Pozzuoli), (9) the Solfaterra, (16) the island of Procida, (7) the road from Naples to Puzzoli and (19) the Appenines in the distance. Hamilton's book is a seminal study of the nature and effects of volcanic activity.
