Hand-coloured etching by Peter Fabris (active 1768-1779), after his own drawing, carried out under William Hamilton's direction. Illustrated plate from Hamilton's study of Italian volcanoes, 'Campi Phlegraei' (published in Naples, 1776). The view of the town of Puzzoli (now known as Pozzuoli) showing (1) the high road from Naples to Pozzuoli and (6) Monte Barbaro. Pozzuoli is said to be where St Paul first preached after arriving by sea from Reggio. Based on letters to the Royal Society, Hamilton's book is a seminal work on the nature and effects of volcanic explosions.
