Hand-coloured etching by Peter Fabris (active 1768-1779). Illustrated plate from William Hamilton's study of Italian volcanoes, 'Campi Phlegraei' (published in Naples, 1776). Shows (4) Mount Vesuvius as seen from (1) Monte St Angelo, an area situated between Torre Del Greco and Torre Dell' Annonciata, and illustrates how rich vegetation can grow on once barren volcanic land. Based on letters to the Royal Society, Hamilton's book was a more precise and useful study of volcanic activity than had previously existed.
