Hand-coloured etching by Peter Fabris (active 1768-1779). Illustrated frontispiece from William Hamilton's study of Italian volcanoes, 'Campi Phlegraei', (published Naples, 1776). Shows (1) volcano on the Lipari Islands and the islands of (2) Castel-a-Mare, (3) Panarea, (4) Saline, (5) Felicura and the largest island (6) Lipari. Based on letters to the Royal Society, Hamilton's book is a seminal work on the nature and effects of volcanic explosions, illustrating his claim that volcanoes are creative natural forces.
