Decay of a Z particle into an electron and positron, seen in the UA1 detectors, 30 April 1983. This is the first Z event recorded by UA1. Detectors are devices which are used to measure the properties of particles. Some measure tracks left behind by particles and others measure energy. Founded in 1954, CERN is the world's leading particle physics research laboratory, and one of Europe's first joint ventures.
