Ambrose Swasey (1846-1937) started his career at Pratt & Whitney as a machinist, where he devised new methods for making gear-tooth cutters. In 1880 Swasey set up his own company with Worcester Warner called the Warner & Swasey Company. Originally focusing on lathes, the Warner & Swasey Company gained a reputation for making astronomical telescopes.
