The Tonschreiber tape recorder was a military version of the tape recorder (Magnetophone), using quarter-inch wide acetate and PVC tape, that had been developed by the German manufacturers aeG and IG Farben in the early 1930s. It was carried in a fieldpack and used for a variety of purposes: to record all kinds of programmes; to listen in on long distance calls; to record and broadcast propaganda; and to act as the precursor of flight recorders to analyse the cause of crashes.
