Model (scale 1:50). Detail. These reactors were built and became operational in 1988. In 1958, the United Kingdom Atomic Energy Authority (UKaeA) began work on the AGR. The core is graphite and the coolant is carbon dioxide, but the AGR operates at much higher temperatures than the Magnox reactor, and so uses uranium oxide fuel clad in stainles steel.
