Portrait of George Francis Train (1829-1904). In 1857 Train attempted to introduce trains into Britain, but due to opposition from the then Chief Commisioner of Works, Sir Benjamin Hall, and also from Mr Beresford Hope, there was a ten year delay before the development of tramways. Train was also a candidate for the US presidency in 1869 and the following year travelled around the world in 80 days.
