Used by a blacksmith who worked at the Portslade Forge, Portslade, near Brighton. Blacksmiths work iron and steel while it is hot and need a variety of tools both to hold the hot metal and to cut or shape it. They continually adapt tools or make new ones to suit each piece of work. Iron is used for economy because it is easily worked. Steel is used for tools that must be stiff or hard.
