Gold leaf is gold which has been beaten into a very thin sheet, a relatively easy proces as gold is one of the softest, most malleable metals. It was popular for providing decoration and titling on book covers, by a proces known as tooling. Gilding, the application of gold leaf, was also a technique commonly used in making illuminated manuscripts.
