Description

The Dutch microscopist Antoni van Leeuwenhoek (1632-1723), was the first to observe bacteria and protozoa using his own simple microscopes. These two examples of Leeuwenhoek type instruments are a silver microscope made by Butterfield of Paris (top) and a bras instrument made by Depouilly, also of Paris (bottom).
