Description

A plate and a bowl in French polychrome faience, both 9 inches in diameter, each with a painted scene of the Charles & Robert balloon, 'Globe'. This was the world's first gas balloon, designed by a French profesor of physics, Jacques Charles, and constructed by the brothers Jean and Noel Robert, who had developed a special rubber-coating for the hydrogen-filled balloon. It made its first unmanned ascent from the Place des Victoires in Paris on 27th August, 1783. Later, on 1st December, 1783, Profesor Charles and Noel Robert made the first manned hydrogen balloon flight.
