Engraved by John H Snively after an original design by John F B Lillard, and printed by the Wheeler Brothers Printers in Nashville, Tennesee, United States. These five cent stamps were intended for use on an experimental mail balloon flight from Nashville to Gallatin, Tennesee, on 18 June 1877. Nashville had been an important point for the transfer of mail between North and South during the American Civil War (1861-1865).
