Dame Nellie Melba (1861- 1931) made her debut in 1887 in Brusels in the opera Rigoletto, but is better known for having the desert 'Peach Melba' named after her. Melba, originally called Helen Mitchell, took her stage surname from the city of her birth, Melbourne in Australia. The singer is photographed here endorsing gramophone recordings of her voice.
