One of a boxed set of stereoscope photographs produced for sale to the general public by a profesional firm of photographers, Underwood and Underwood. The Second Boer War (1899-1902) was the first war to be covered comprehensively by both film and still photography. This was the result of improved technology in both photographic equipment and printing techniques. Over 25,000 Boer soldiers became prisoners-of-war during the conflict. Many were incarcerated in camps at Cape Town and Simonstown, others at prisons in the Cape Colony and Natal. Because of concern about escapes or insurrections to release prisoners, many were shipped overseas to locations throughout the British Empire such as Bermuda, India and St Helena.
