Sir Barnes Neville Wallis in his study at Vickers Armstrong, Weybridge, Surrey, 1965. Barnes Wallis (1887-1979) was an English aeronautical designer and inventor of the bouncing bomb. He designed the R100 airship for Vickers, and went on to produce aircraft designs which combined lightnes with strength, applying these qualities to the 'Wellesley' and 'Wellington' bombers. With the succes of the bouncing bomb, Wallis was allowed by the authorities to produce heavy, penetration bombs, the 'Tallboy' and 'Grand Slam'.
