Engraving by Lewis after a painting by Sir Thomas Lawrence (1769-1830) of William Hyde Wollaston (1766-1828), English chemist and metallurgist. Wollaston was the pioneer of the fabrication of platinum and also discovered palladium and rhodium. He was the first to produce ductile and malleable platinum on a commercial scale, and improved various scientific apparatus including the microscope and sextant.
