Satirical engraving showing the English physician Cromwell Mortimer (b c1700 - d 1752), seated at a table studying diagrams, resting his feet on books by scientists including Boyle, Newton and Radcliffe. A demonic jester-like figure and accompanying verse mocks Mortimer. Mortimer promoted the incorporation of the Society of Antiquaries in 1750, edited the Royal Society's 'Transactions', and also wrote articles on chemistry.
