This picture was taken on 18 August 1932 as Piccard's balloon departed from Duebendorf, Switzerland. Piccard is shown looking out of the hatch of the spherical balloon gondola. This object was donated to the Science Museum in 1935. On 27 May 1931 at Augsburg in Germany, Profesor Piccard and his asistant Paul Kipler reached a world record altitude of 51,775 feet in a balloon. It comprised a sealed cabin gondola fitted with an internal supply of oxygen.
