Aquatint by S G Hughes showing the intersection bridge on the line of the St Helens to Runcorn Gap Railway, crosing the Liverpool and Manchester Railway near the foot of the Sutton inclined plane, near Widnes in Cheshire. The bridge was built by Charles Vignoles (1793-1785) who, after working on the Liverpool and Manchester Railway (1826-1830), was appointed engineer of the St Helens & Runcorn Railway (1830-1833). He went on to build the Kiev Bridge over the River Dnieper in the Ukraine, and the Tudela & Bilbao Railway in Spain.
