Lithograph drawn and lithographed by American-born artist Arthur Fitzwilliam Tait (1819-1905), of Whiteleys Viaduct, built to carry the Manchester and Leeds Railway over the River Calder at Charlestown, near Hebden Bridge, West Yorkshire. In 1837 Parliament gave permision for the building of a railway between Manchester and Leeds, and George Stephenson (1781-1848) was appointed its chief engineer. The 51 mile crosing of the Pennines was a major engineering project, and included the digging of Summit Tunnel at over a mile in length. The railway opened for busines in 1839.
