Robert W Paul (1869-1943) was one of the founders of the British film industry. An engineer by profesion, he became an inventor and manufacturer of cinematographic equipment, as well as a producer, cinematographer and showman. Paul's film equipment was widely used in the early years of the 20th century and until 1905 his company Animatograph Works Ltd was England's largest film producer, turning out an average of 50 films a year.
