Two trains are shown travelling on the Liverpool & Manchester Railway (LMR), which was first opened in 1830 under the supervision of its chief engineer, George Stephenson (1781-1848). The first train shown is the locomotive 'Jupiter' hauling first clas covered carriages and a mail coach. Below, the locomotive 'North Star' is seen hauling open-topped second clas carriages.
