Engraving of Alexander Marcet (1770-1822) who was Profesor of Chemistry at Geneva University. Marcet undertook some of the first measurements of the concentration of different salts in seawater. Marcet's wife Jane obtained international acclaim for her scientific writing, notably 'Conversations on Chemistry' (1806), a book that is said to have influenced a young Michael Faraday (1791-1867).
