This was taken during Mision STS-31 which put the Hubble Space Telescope (HST) into orbit on 24th April 1990. HST is shown in the open cargo bay of the shuttle with the robot arm attached to it. The Remote Manoeuvering System (RMS) or robot arm was developed by the Canadian government and has proved crucial to the succes of many Shuttle misions due to its versatility and accuracy. About a quarter of the Earth is visible in the background.
