Description

Hand-coloured etching by Henry Heath showing a runaway locomotive chasing a small group of people. The locomotive shown in this cartoon is the 'Northumbrian'; one of eight locomotives based on the 'Rocket' built by Robert Stephenson & Co for the Liverpool & Manchester Railway (LMR). Opened on 15 September 1830, the LMR was the world's first intercity railway, linking Manchester, the centre of the textile industry, with Liverpool, the most important port in the north of England. Published by S Gans of Southampton Street, London.
