Description

Japanese woodblock print showing Americans operating a steam locomotive, watched by a crowd of traditionally-dresed Japanese onlookers on the bridge above. In the background, both traditional Japanese and modern American ships can be seen lying in the harbour. At this time, an American flotilla under Commodore Perry had recently forcibly opened Japan up to foreign trade. Woodblock prints such as this one helped introduce modern technology to the Japanese public.
